Exploring Sustainable Solutions: Teikyo University's Economics Seminar Partners with Asahi Group Japan

In a recent collaboration between Teikyo University's Faculty of Economics and Asahi Group Japan Co., Ltd., the Lisa Nagai seminar delved into innovative strategies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The second workshop, held on December 14, 2023, at the Hachioji Campus cafeteria, focused on the theme of "Smart Drinking (Sumadori)," advocating for SDG 3 - "Good health and well-being for all."
Nagai Seminar, led by Senior Assistant Professor Lisa Nagai, actively contributes to SDGs, exemplified by initiatives like incorporating TFT menus. These menus, available at the cafeteria with a nominal fee increase of 20 yen, support school lunches for children in developing countries.^*1The workshop gathered participants into four groups, each tasked with presenting strategies for promoting Sumadori. Rooted in SDG principles, Sumadori aims to address the pervasive issue of alcohol harassment stemming from peer pressure within athletic organizations. To visualize the amount of alcohol consumed, the groups developed a unique glass with a memory feature.^*2A highlight of the workshop was the creation of videos portraying a world both with and without Sumadori. Post-presentation, students offered diverse proposals, including turning "smart drinking" into a verb and establishing a concept cafe named Sumadori x Veranda Café.
Representatives from Asahi Group Japan expressed appreciation for the students' perspectives, praising their presentation skills and the incorporation of advertising regulations into their proposals. The collaboration extends beyond workshops, with Nagai Seminar actively engaged in the MUP project. This project focuses on collecting and recycling plastic bottle caps, aligning with ongoing efforts to achieve the SDGs.
The success of the collaboration underscores Teikyo University's commitment to fostering practical solutions and sustainable practices. As the partnership with Asahi Group Japan continues, the university remains dedicated to shaping initiatives that contribute meaningfully to the global goals outlined in the SDGs.
