Itabashi CampusSenior Assistant Professor Doshi Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences elucidates part of the mechanism by which hypothermia protects the brain

Dr. Michikatsu, Senior Assistant Professor Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Functional Morphology of the Human Body, Teikyo University, has elucidated a part of the mechanism by which hypothermia therapy protects the brain through joint research with Dr. Yuto Natori, Graduate School Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Medicine, Nagoya University.
Hypothermia therapy has already been applied clinically, but the mechanism is not clear, so there were differences in effectiveness depending on the case. In this study, we compared metabolites in the hippocampus of the brain using a mouse model that can prevent neuronal death in the hippocampus of the brain by hypothermia (34°C) and a mouse model mouse with normal body temperature (37°C), and revealed that adenosine monophosphate and xMr./Ms. tosine monophosphate are metabolites that increase with hypothermia. The results of this research are expected to lead to the establishment of an effective protocol for hypothermia therapy and the development of new brainprotective drugs in the future.
The results of this research were published in Springer Nature's "Scientific Reports" on Wednesday, February 7, 2024.
