Seminar on childcare support systems held

From Tuesday, January 9 to Friday, February 9, 2024, Teikyo University Support Center for Women Physicians and Researchers and Teikyo University's Committee for the Promotion of Gender Equality jointly conducted a seminar on childcare support systems. This seminar was conducted via on-demand delivery and can be viewed anytime as an archive after the seminar.
The day began with a lecture by Fumi Murakami of the University Faculty of Law Department of Law Professor on "The Current Situation Regarding Balancing Work and Childcare and the Revised Child Care and Family Care Leave Law." Following an explanation of the declining birthrate and the difficulties in balancing childcare and work in Japan, he explained that while over 80% of women have taken childcare leave, only 17% of men have taken leave, and that the length of leave taken by women While more than 80% of women have taken childcare leave, only 17% of men have taken childcare leave, and 95% of women have taken childcare leave for more than 6 months, while about 51% of men have taken childcare leave for less than 2 weeks. In response to this situation, he explained that the government is currently promoting the use of childcare leave by men.
The Center's staff then reported on the current status of childcare among the university's faculty and staff, based on a needs assessment survey, including opinions from male faculty and staff who did not take childcare leave, and the situation where the difficulty of balancing childcare and work is more pronounced among female faculty and staff. After that, the Human Resources Division explained the regulations concerning childbirth and childcare at the University.
Finally, as a "Q&A based on case studies," an interview was conducted with a male faculty member who has taken childcare leave. They gave specific advice on why they decided to take childcare leave and what they thought would be good for them to do during their childcare leave, such as deciding in advance between husband and wife what their responsibilities would be.
