A research group at Hachioji CampusMedical Mycology Research Center has discovered that cryptococcosis in cats may be an indicator of human infection.

A research group led by veterinarian Miki Omura (4th year Graduate School of Medicine) at Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology, postdoctoral researcher Shun Tamura, research assistant Aya Komori, Professor Rui Kano, and deputy Head of Center and Professor Koichi Makimura, has revealed for the first time that the type of cryptococcus (a type of fungus) carried by pet cats in Japan is the same as the type that infects humans in Japan. This finding is expected to contribute to the prevention and early detection of cryptococcosis.
The results of this research were published in Medical Mycology on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
