On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, a symposium to establish the Neuroscience Alliance was held at Fukutake Hall, University of Tokyo (Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo).
In order to promote comprehensive collaboration in education and research among the three institutions of Teikyo University, the University of Tokyo, and the RIKEN Advanced Comprehensive Research Organization Center for Neurointelligence (ACRO), the University of Tokyo International Research Center for Neurointelligence (WPI-IRCN), and the RIKEN Center for Brain Science (RIKEN CBS).As a first step in this collaboration, the three institutions co-hosted a symposium with the support of the Japan Golf Association.
The symposium was divided into two parts. In the first part, after greetings from each institution, including Hiroko Okinaga Executive Director of the University, Makoto Asajima, Director of the University's Advanced Comprehensive Research Organization, represented the other participants and signed a memorandum of understanding for the Neuroscience Alliance. In a presentation titled "Taking on the Universe of the Athlete's Brain: A New Challenge in Cognitive Neuroscience - Toward Improving Athlete Performance," scientists from three research institutions tackling the mysteries of the brain delivered lectures that explored the workings of the brain and the mechanisms behind the yips, using approaches from their respective fields of expertise. From the University of Tokyo, Professor Kazuo Okanoya Advanced Comprehensive Research Organization gave a presentation on his research on the theme of "Birdsong Control and Auditory Feedback."
The second part of the event featured a special discussion between professional golfers Kaori Oe and Kazuya Nakajima on the topic of "Professional Golfers and the Yips," as well as a special lecture by Masayuki Iwade, Sports Bureau Rugby Football Club, on the topic of "Approaching Diversifying Student Attitudes," based on his experience as head coach of the Teikyo University Rugby Club, where he led the team to nine consecutive victories in the National University Rugby Championship.
This symposium was a great success, with applications far exceeding the capacity. We would like to express our deep gratitude to the researchers, athletes, and participants who took part, as well as the Japan Golf Association for their support. Taking this program as a first step, we will develop various projects in the future under a comprehensive collaborative system between Teikyo University, the University of Tokyo, and the RIKEN Institute.
