We will start selling shampoo for dogs using a patent pending invention.

Starting Monday, November 18, 2024, Teikyo University will be selling "BASICS CitraCare Citral Shampoo (shampoo for dogs used in veterinary clinics)," which utilizes the invention for which a patent application is pending: "Composition for preventing or treating Malassezia skin diseases and method for preventing or treating Malassezia skin diseases in animals (Patent Application No. 2024-133762)."

This invention was discovered by a research team led by Professor Rui Kano of Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology and Nobuo Murayama, a veterinarian specializing in dog and cat Dermatology at Animal Dermatology Co., Ltd. (Hirano, Koto-ku, Tokyo, hereafter referred to as "Animal Dermatology"). The team discovered that the natural ingredient citral has preventive and therapeutic effects against Malassezia pachydermatis, the causative agent of canine Malassezia dermatitis ^*, and used the natural ingredient citral as a medical composition and treatment/prevention method for canine Malassezia dermatitis. A patent application for this invention has been filed by this university and Animal Dermatology.

In addition, our university and QIX Co., Ltd. (Morino, Machida City, Tokyo, hereinafter referred to as "QIX") signed an exclusive license agreement on Friday, August 9, 2024, and QIX has developed and sold a dog shampoo using this invention. The product has a refreshing scent of citral (lemongrass) and contains citral ingredients to keep the skin of sebum-rich dogs healthy, or can be used as a control shampoo for dogs that regularly use medicated shampoos.

This product will be sold to animal hospitals across the country, and it is expected that it will provide support to veterinarians and dog owners.
Teikyo University will continue to promote research activities that contribute to society and social implementation through industry-academia collaboration.

• * Malassezia dermatitis in dogs
  Due to the influence of the Japanese climate, it is considered a common skin disease that is often seen. Treatment is generally performed with skin care shampoos containing antifungal drugs or oral administration of antifungal drugs. Recently, it has been reported that resistant strains have resistance due to mutations in the ergosterol synthase gene (ERG11 gene), which is the target of azole antifungal drugs, and the veterinary industry has begun to consider countermeasures. Since this canine Malassezia dermatitis is also related to the body constitution, once the dog is infected, it often requires lifelong control, and new treatments that can replace the continuous use of drugs are desired.
