From Monday, October 21st to Monday, December 16th, 2024, students from the seminar of Teikyo University's Faculty of Medical Technology Department of Sport and Medical Science led by Akihide Yamamoto, Senior Assistant Professor, and the seminar of Yasuaki Saho, Associate Professor in the same faculty, held a health exercise class for middle-aged and elderly people in the local area.
This class was launched as a seminar activity this year with the objectives of being planned and run by students as an active learning class, having them put into practice the sports medicine and science knowledge they have learned in class, and experiencing an exercise instruction environment in order to acquire practical skills. 23 middle-aged and elderly people from the local area participated in the class, and they underwent physical fitness tests and healthy exercises. For the physical fitness tests, measurement items aimed at preventing the need for nursing care were selected and were carried out while taking into consideration risks such as falls, and for the healthy exercises, a program was created and implemented through group work that was conscious of preventing locomotive syndrome *.
Although there were times when the students were unfamiliar with the process, they were able to successfully complete all eight classes under the warm support of the participants. The classes were held with the support of the SoTL Project 2024, a grant from the University of Tokyo's Higher Education Development Center.
