On Friday, December 6, 2024, two international students from Malaysia and Jordan enrolled at Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus visited an elementary school in Hachioji City and participated in volunteer activities aimed at interacting with the children.
This initiative was planned by the Hachioji City Board of Education with the aim of deepening understanding of foreign languages and cultures through interaction between students attending elementary schools in the city and international students, as well as creating opportunities for communication using foreign languages.
The exchange began on the day with a warm welcome from about 60 sixth graders. The international students gave presentations on their home countries' cultures, languages, food, and more, and the participating children seemed to have gained a deeper understanding of their countries, which they had researched beforehand, and were interested in foods and cultures that they do not usually see. The children introduced Japanese culture and games, and also tried out calligraphy and Japanese drumming, and at the end, they were presented with many souvenirs. The international students were able to learn about Japanese traditions and culture while having fun, and seemed very impressed by the heartfelt handmade gifts.
Through this activity, the international students commented, "I was glad that everyone was so eager to research their own countries and become interested in them." Both the international students and the elementary school students were able to spend a valuable time interacting with each other.
