Students from the Faculty of Medicine Itabashi CampusSchool of Medicine the characteristics of patient safety awareness among medical students at the time of enrollment

On Thursday, November 14, 2024, Shun Obara (6th year School of Medicine) compared the patient safety awareness of medical students at the time of enrollment with that of students of the same age group under the guidance of Professor Yasuhiro Otaki of Teikyo University General Medical Education and Research Center, and revealed that medical students have a high level of interest in many aspects of medicine, including patient safety, from the time of enrollment.
Furthermore, on Thursday, February 13, 2025, Kentaro Miura (6th year School of Medicine) conducted a similar study under the guidance of a doctor, comparing the patient safety awareness of medical students and pharmacy students at the time of enrollment, and revealed that medical students have a strong sense of ownership over ensuring patient safety from the time of enrollment.
Generally, patient safety awareness refers to the attitude and mindset of healthcare professionals who prioritize patient safety and take the initiative to improve the quality of medical care. Previous research has also pointed out that medical students have a high level of patient safety awareness, but this study revealed that medical students' patient safety awareness is already higher at the time of enrollment than their peers and pharmacy students. Another previous study has pointed out that medical students tend to lose motivation to learn as they progress through the academic years. The results of this study suggest the importance of providing systematic patient safety education to students in their early years, when patient safety awareness is high. These research findings are expected to provide important insights into the establishment of patient safety education before graduation in School of Medicine.
Obara's research results were published in the academic journal "Healthcare," and Miura's research results were published in the academic journal "Advances in Medical Education and Practice." We look forward to seeing even greater success from these two.
