Hachioji CampusProfessor Makimura attends the closing ceremony of the Hachioji Elementary School Science Education Center

On Saturday, February 15, 2025, Professor Koichi Makimura, Deputy Head of Center Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology was invited to attend the closing ceremony of the Hachioji City Elementary School Science Education Center for 2024, held at the Hachioji City Education Center.
Since 1997, at the request of the Hachioji City Board of Education, the University's Medical Mycology Research Center has been running the Hachioji City Summer Children's Science Class in collaboration with the Center. The 27th science class, held in July last year, was themed on "What are genes (DNA) - the blueprint of living things?" 73 children participated, and under the guidance of Deputy Head of Center Makimura and others, they conducted an experiment to extract DNA from pufferfish milt. In recognition of these many years of contributions to the community, the Center presented the school with a letter of appreciation in December 2024.

The closing ceremony resumed the invitation of guests, which had been temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and was attended by the Hachioji City Superintendent of Education, the Hachioji City Elementary School Principals Association President, and other relevant parties. Research presentations and an awards ceremony were held by sixth graders from Hachioji City elementary schools who belonged to the center. In his guest speech, Vice Head of Center Makimura praised the children's interest in science and their spirit of inquiry, and the event served as an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of continued collaboration between our university and local educational institutions.
Our university will continue to support local educational activities and contribute to developing the scientific thinking skills of children who will lead the next generation.
