On Monday, October 13, 2025 (national holiday), at the 68th Kanto University Karate Championships held at the Nippon Budokan (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), the Teikyo University Karate Club won the men's team kata and women's team kumite, achieving a double crown.
The tournament consisted of four events: men's and women's team kata, and men's and women's team kumite. The men's team kata won its 17th consecutive victory, and the women's team kumite won its 13th overall victory, its first in four years. The women's team kata and men's team kumite both narrowly lost in the finals, coming in second place.
In the morning's team kata competition, both men and women advanced through the preliminaries with calm demonstrations. In the final, the women's team kata, which had been on a 19-game winning streak, narrowly lost to Kokushikan University by 0.2 points. As the atmosphere in the venue changed completely, the men's team kata demonstrated their true ability with a safe game, beating Kokushikan University by 0.9 points and achieving a commanding consecutive victory.
In the women's team kumite, each player, including captain Sena Goto (4th year, Faculty of Medical Technology), who was frustrated at not being able to show her true potential in the individual competitions in the previous term, played with great spirit, winning a fierce battle that went all the way to the finals to secure victory.
Regarding the double crown at this tournament, Kagawa Masao, head coach and instructor of the university's karate club, said, "Captain Goto maintained a fighting attitude, never backing down from his opponent. In the actual match, Goto was the only one who was able to perform the kumite exactly as he had practiced. This tournament is truly amazing. There is only one month until the All-Japan Team Championships, whether you laugh or cry. We want to see how far we can all go, and approach the day of the tournament with a refreshing feeling."
Please keep an eye on the All Japan University Karate Championships on Sunday, November 16th, where Shihan Kagawa and his students will compete in what will be his last time as head coach of the university's karate club. We hope you will continue to support the club in the future.
