Former Prime Minister Hatoyama gave a special lecture on international politics and Japanese diplomacy atHachioji Campus

On Wednesday, December 17, 2025, in the "International Relations II" class taught by Professor Watanabe Hirotaka of the Department Department of Political Science Faculty of Law University, Yukio Hatoyama (Yukio), former Prime Minister of Japan and Chairman of the East Asia Community Research Institute, a general incorporated foundation, gave a special lecture as a guest speaker on the theme of "Troubling international politics and Japanese diplomacy - the path to an East Asia community."

This class focused on the structure of U.S.-European relations and alliances, and explored the U.S.'s alliances with Asia-Pacific countries and the transatlantic alliance. During the lecture, former Prime Minister Hatoyama touched on his past political activities and current research, while also discussing the latest political topics. He explained the situation in East Asia since World War II, Japan's foreign policy toward the U.S. and China, and the history of international politics. He also provided detailed explanations of the so-called Murayama Statement, the issue of historical recognition, and the Okinawa issue, as well as his own ideas of "fraternity" and "East Asian community." Many students attended this rare opportunity to hear a lecture from former Prime Minister Hatoyama, and he answered their active questions as thoroughly as time allowed.

Our university will continue to foster International perspectives through lectures by guest speakers with a wide range of practical experience, broaden knowledge, and cultivate individuals who can think and make decisions independently.
