Exploring Latin America: Beyond the Music to Its Social Realities

On Thursday, December 18, 2025, the 5th Global Challenge Seminar was held online for students, faculty, and staff members across all campuses. The theme, “Latin America – Far or Near? Beyond the Cheerful Music Lies Another Side of Central and South America,” invited participants to look deeper into the region’s complexities.
The seminar aims to encourage learning about international issues beyond academic boundaries while fostering cross-campus interaction and discussion. Through these experiences, participants engage with the university’s educational philosophy of developing “Global Competency” and “Making Globalization Part of Everyday Life.”
The program featured two lectures: Yuichi Sendai,  Associate Professor in the Faculty of Languages and Cultures, presented “The Struggles and Challenges of Latin American Farmers Facing Inequality,” while Takuya Yamada, Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Public Health, delivered “Who Gets Left Behind? Examining Social Inequality in Latin America Through Disability Support in Colombia.”
At the start of the seminar, participants actively shared their impressions of Latin America via chat. Following the lectures and Q&A sessions, a free discussion period allowed attendees to revisit their initial perceptions and exchange ideas to deepen their understanding.
Approximately 38 students, faculty, and staff members joined the seminar, creating a meaningful space for learning and interaction across campuses.

The Teikyo University Global Initiative Office will continue to provide opportunities to learn about global issues and engage in cross-cultural exchange.
