Hachioji CampusStudents and faculty from the Department of Department of Sport and Medical Science Faculty of Medical Technology participated as medical volunteers in the Yokohama Marathon 2024

On Sunday, October 27, 2024, 33 students from Teikyo University Faculty of Medical Technology Department of Sport and Medical Science and Akihide Yamamoto from the same department Senior Assistant Professor participated in the Yokohama Marathon 2024 held in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, as First Responder (FR) rescue volunteers. This year marked the 10th time the Yokohama Marathon was held as a full marathon. Our department has participated as a first aid volunteer since the first event, and 14 students have continued to participate.
The FR team of first aid volunteers were deployed in pairs along the marathon course under the direction of a captain with an AED, who looked out for the safety of race participants and treated many cases of dehydration and leg cramps. Yuma Segami (Faculty of Medical Technology, sophomore), who participated as a first-aid volunteer this time, said, "Participating in the Yokohama Marathon as a first-aid volunteer, I was touched by the runners' efforts and enthusiasm, and I realized anew the importance of cheering and supporting them. In particular, as a first-aid volunteer, I had the opportunity to deal with runners who were sick or injured during the marathon, and I was required to respond quickly and calmly. I felt it was important to be able to make decisions quickly and give appropriate treatment in a tense situation. I also learned the importance of cooperation and communication among volunteers, firefighters, and doctors. I realized that working together as a team leads to the safety and security of the runners. Through this experience, I was able to hone skills that will be useful in my future work and daily life. I believe that the ability to make calm decisions, the ability to respond flexibly to situations, and the importance of cooperation will be useful in any situation. Through this rescue activity, I felt the joy of being able to help others, and I would definitely like to participate again next time if the opportunity arises," said one of the participants.
We look forward to the further growth of these students through their experience in practical rescue activities.
